Water is creeping toward the Des Moines Public Schools bus garage near Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway and Prospect Road.
Bus drivers have moved many of the buses to other locations in the metro, including about 70 to Altoona. A mechanics shed is already under water but most of the tools and equipment were removed prior to the flood.
Gary Thomas, a service mechanic for the district, watched the waters rise with about 20 other drivers and auto staff at around 10 a.m. today.
He said the water, so far, is not nearly as bad as in 1993. He estimated that the water inched its way about 20 feet up the parking area in about four hours.“It was nuts back then,” Thomas said. “Right now, we’re a lot better off but that could change in the next 48 hours.”
NOTE: 106 busses have been moved to a safe location; approximately 30 busses are operating to serve current needs.
